Effective depth, d= Distance between the centroid of the area of tension reinforcement and the maximum compression fiber.

Deflection:

  • The final deflection due to all loads including the effects of temperature, creep and shrinkage should not exceed .
  • The deflection including the effects of temperature, creep and shrinkage occurring after erection of partitions and the application of finishes should not exceed .

Span to Depth Ratios (For spans up to 10m):

  • Cantilever 7
  • Simply supported 20
  • Continuous 26

Modification factors applicable.

Slenderness Limits for beams:

  • Clear distance between simply supported or continuous beams the lateral restraint does not exceed
  • Clear distance between cantilever beams the lateral restraint does not exceed
  • Clear Cover- 25mm
  • Maximum reinforcement – 2.5%
  • Minimum reinforcement – 0.12%
  • Formwork:   7 days
  • Propping:     Span up to 6m – 14days
  • Span over 6m – 21days
  • Tolerances +12mm to -6mm

Maximum Spacing:

  • Fe500 – 150mm
  • Fe415 – 180mm

Beams with multiple layers

  • 15mm
  • 2/3rd of maximum aggregate size
  • Maximum size of the bar

Whichever is greater.
